Christ the Redeemer

High above the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, you’ll find one of the world’s largest and most famous statues – the Christ the Redeemer! This enormous statue stands 98 feet tall and has a arm span of 92 feet wide. It weighs over 1,145 tons!

Christ the Redeemer was completed in 1931 after 5 years of construction. Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa designed the statue, which was built entirely from concrete and soapstone. The statue depicts Jesus Christ with arms outstretched, meant to symbolize peace. It provides amazing views over Rio and the surrounding landscapes.

Some cool facts about Christ the Redeemer – it was struck by lightning in 2014 and lost a thumb! Luckily repairs were made. The statue has become an icon of Rio and of Brazil itself. In 2007 it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. And in 2016 for the Olympics it was even lit up to look like the Brazilian flag!

Visiting Christ the Redeemer is a must-do if traveling to Rio de Janeiro. You can take a train up through the Tijuca Forest to the top of Corcovado Mountain, where the statue stands. Make sure to take lots of photos with this iconic landmark in the background! The views from the top are simply breathtaking.
