The Manhattan Project
The Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada.
The project was named after the location of its primary facility, the Manhattan Engineer District headquarters at 270 Broadway in New York City. The project’s success in developing nuclear weapons contributed to the end of World War II and ushered in the Atomic Age. However, the devastating effects of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been widely debated, leading to the ongoing debate over the role of nuclear weapons in modern warfare.
