The Louvre

The Louvre is one of the largest and most famous museums in the world! It is located in Paris, France right along the Seine River. The Louvre originally served as a fortress and then a royal palace before becoming a museum in 1793. Today, it displays over 38,000 objects and artworks!

Some of the most famous works of art in the Louvre include the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and the Venus de Milo sculpture. Egyptian antiquities like the Seated Scribe are also major highlights. When visiting, make sure to see the glass Pyramid designed by I.M. Pei that serves as the Louvre’s main entrance.

Here’s a cool fact – the Louvre was actually the world’s largest art museum until 1999! It houses departments for Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities, as well as Islamic art, sculpture and decorative arts. Many of the works came from French kings and aristocrats collections over hundreds of years.

With over 10 million visitors every year, the Louvre is the most visited museum in the world. Give yourself plenty of time to explore its vast galleries and halls. Don’t miss masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, as well as the building’s own impressive architecture.
